Evergreen Redwood

The coast redwood can grow considerably taller than its relative, the mountain or giant sequoia, reaching a maximum height of up to 110 meters. However, with a diameter of up to seven meters, it is significantly slimmer, as mountain sequoias can reach diameters of up to 17 meters. Due to its reddish-brown heartwood, it is also classified as a redwood tree, the tallest specimens of which can be found in Redwood National Park in the US state of California. The tree is evergreen and forms a slender, pyramidal crown with bright green needles on a largely branchless trunk. Interestingly, the coast redwood exhibits two different types of needles. Firstly, there are 10 to 20 millimeter long needles, dark green on the upper surface and grayish-green on the underside, which appear primarily on the shaded shoots. Secondly, the tree displays shorter, six-millimeter-long scale-like needles, which are found mainly in the upper part of the crown, which faces more sunlight. The reddish-brown, fibrous bark, which emits a resinous aroma, can be seen quite early on.

Natural habitat: As the name suggests, coast redwoods are found primarily in the coastal regions of Northern California and the US state of Oregon.
