Japanese five-needle pine - symbol of vitality and immortality
Outside its native range, the Japanese white pine, when planted outdoors, reaches a height of six to eight meters, developing a conical crown when young and a somewhat irregular crown with age, supported by tiered branches. Typical of pines, the approximately five-centimeter-long, soft needles are arranged in clusters of five. This is the origin of its alternative name – Japanese five-needle pine. In spring, it displays numerous small red flowers. The pinkish male cones, only seven millimeters long, are arranged along the young shoots that emerge in spring and pollinate other trees through wind pollination. The larger female cones, brown in color, often remain on the branches for several years before releasing their seeds. In the Far East, the pine symbolizes immortality and vitality. Two pines planted close together symbolize love and fidelity. The Japanese white pine is considered a key tree in bonsai culture in Japan because it is very easy to cultivate as a bonsai.
Natural habitat: The Japanese white pine is native to Asia, ranging from Japan to South Korea. There, it primarily inhabits the sunny, high-altitude areas of the mountains.
