Horned violets were already used for medicinal purposes by the ancient Romans, Hippocrates, and Hildegard von Bingen. They are biennial, herbaceous plants. New flowers appear on their branching stems almost throughout the entire season. The plants grow bushy and reach a height of 15 to 20 centimeters. At the end of their three-centimeter-wide flowers is a short spur. The plants owe their name to this horn-like structure. Horned violets have their main flowering period in March and a second bloom in autumn. During the flowering period, small capsule fruits develop from the fertilized flowers, which burst open when ripe and scatter small, round seeds. Through this self-seeding, they reappear in a different location each year. If you want to stop this tendency to spread, you should remove all withered flower heads in good time.
Natural habitat:The wild horned violet originally comes from the Pyrenees and northern Spain. In these natural habitats, it thrives among rocks and in grasslands.
