The perennial, slow-growing edible banana reaches flowering maturity at a height of two to three meters and an age of three years. The flowers emerge from the center of the stem with a thick, red bud, from which whorls of white blossoms unfold, while the flower stalk continues to lengthen. The golden-yellow fruits are seedless. The fruit-bearing pseudostem, formed solely from the leaf sheaths, then dies, but new shoots grow from the root. Originally from Southeast Asia, the true fruit banana is one of the original forms of the modern banana. In old encyclopedias, it was also known as the paradise fig or the tubular apple.
