The Living Granite resembles the Living Stones of the genus Lithops in appearance. The thick, fleshy leaf pair is fused directly at the base, giving the appearance of a small granite boulder. It opens when a new leaf pair develops or when flowers are forming. Unlike other species of the genus Pleiospilos, its approximately 7-centimeter-wide, orange to yellow flowers, which have a strong coconut fragrance, appear in early spring rather than autumn.

Natural habitat: The Living Granite's natural habitat is found in the Karoo Steppe on the border between the Western and Eastern Cape in South Africa.
