The Yeti of columnar cacti - Hardy down to -20° Celsius

The mountain cactus is among the most beautiful of the spiny and hairy columnar cacti. Although it grows slowly, it can reach a height of one to two meters over the years. Its stems are densely covered with white hairs, giving it the appearance of an old man with a white beard, but this actually protects it from cold and dehydration. The purplish-pink flowers, up to ten centimeters long, appear near the stem tips in summer.

Natural habitat: The mountain cactus is native to the high Andes Mountains, at altitudes of up to 4,000 meters.
