The very name promises warmth, sunshine, and intense aroma

Common thyme is a perennial, low-growing herb used for its culinary, aromatic, and medicinal properties. It reaches a height of up to 40 centimeters and its leaves, when crushed, have a strong, aromatic fragrance. The flowering period of its small, pale purple blossoms lasts from May to October. When growing in a pot, it should be placed in a tall container, as thyme develops deep taproots.

Natural habitat:  Common thyme originally comes from the western Mediterranean region of Europe.

In the kitchen:  Thyme is a classic among Mediterranean herbs. Whether dried or fresh makes little difference in cooking, as the aroma of thyme leaves can even triple when dried. Meat gains significantly in flavor from its bittersweet and wonderfully aromatic taste. But vegetarian dishes such as fried potatoes or potato gratin can also be beautifully enhanced with thyme. Or try tarte flambée, topped with thin slices of apple, goat cheese, and sprigs of thyme instead of bacon and onions. Thyme also goes well with leafy salads and, of course, with feta cheese baked in foil. Desserts with thyme are another delicious idea. Besides citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, apples, peaches, and figs also pair wonderfully with thyme. Thyme is hardly affected by heat and can therefore, unlike some other herbs, be used throughout the entire cooking process.
