Licorice root is certainly one of the oldest herbal remedies. This perennial, herbaceous plant can reach a height of up to one meter and was once a popular medicinal and useful plant in cottage gardens due to its effectiveness in treating coughs, hoarseness, and stomach problems. Its pretty, light purple to white, butterfly-shaped flowers appear in loose clusters in late summer.

Natural habitat: Licorice is originally native to the Mediterranean region and Western Asia. Early imports from the Near East led to its widespread use, particularly in the coastal regions of Europe.
