The leaves of the deciduous white mulberry tree serve as food for silkworms in Indian silk production. The leaves of the same tree can vary from smooth-edged to deeply finger-shaped and deeply lobed. It owes its name to its white buds, which appear in May and June, and its white fruits, which can turn reddish in strong sunlight. Even young trees can bear abundant quantities of the juicy, sweet fruit. The tree is winter-hardy and easy to care for, both in the ground and in containers, and can be shaped by pruning – even willow-like varieties with umbrella-shaped, drooping branches are possible.

Natural habitat: The white mulberry tree is originally native to Manchuria in China.
