Awarded the title of Medicinal Plant of the Year 2014, anise was already used in ancient Egyptian medicine as a remedy for coughs, snakebites, indigestion, respiratory infections, and even melancholy. The physician Dioscorides described its stimulating effect on libido, making anise one of the most widely used plants in Roman and Greek society. This annual plant, with its heart-shaped basal leaves, can reach a height of 30–50 centimeters. After its white flowers bloom from June to August, it produces egg-shaped fruits.
