The Baikal skullcap, growing 25 to 30 cm tall and upright, produces its blue flowers from July to September. The upper lip of its two-lipped flowers is dark blue, while the lower lip is sky blue. After flowering, small nutlets develop from the blossoms. The plant is particularly well-suited for rock gardens, dry stone walls, and other natural garden areas. The Scutellaria also provides an excellent food source for numerous beneficial insect species and, with its late flowering, is an ideal bee pasture.
Natural habitat: The Baikal skullcap's natural habitat is in northern East Asia. There, it inhabits rather dry, barren locations such as steppes and grasslands.
