Small tree with sweet fruit

This small tree, growing up to six meters tall, was already known to the Greeks as a cultivated plant and a symbol of wisdom, and was dedicated to the god Pan. Its sweet and flavorful autumn fruits were formerly used to make mulberry wine, and the intensely colored juice was used to clarify red wine. The fruits are edible or can be made into jam. Dried, they taste similar to raisins. This robust fruit tree with its rough leaves is easy to care for and largely winter-hardy in temperate climates. In May and June, it produces yellowish flowers resembling willow catkins, and the fruits appear just eight weeks later. Incidentally, sneaking a taste from its low, broad crown is difficult, as the sweet mulberries leave noticeable marks on the fingers and tongue, though these are easily washed off. The mulberry can be planted in the ground or grown successfully in a container. Its

natural habitat is Central and Western Asia. However, it has also been cultivated in Southern Europe for several centuries. In Central Europe, however, it can only be found in warm locations due to its limited frost tolerance.
