Lycium chinense grows into a deciduous, sparsely branched, and only slightly thorny shrub up to two meters tall. After flowering, the shrub develops its red, oblong-oval, and vitamin-rich fruits from August onwards. These can be eaten raw or dried and processed into juice and jam. The sweet goji berry is a traditional ingredient in Chinese medicine and contains more vitamin B and antioxidants than any other fruit. Caution: The genus Lycium belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae). As with the tomato plant, for example, the plant parts are poisonous. However, the fruits are not.
Natural habitat: The goji berry originates in Eurasia and is found there in China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Nepal, and Pakistan.
