Known and proven in monastic medicine since the Middle Ages

This annual or biennial perennial grows to a height of 10 to 50 centimeters and displays its pretty white flowers from March to November. Monastic medicine has valued it for its hemostatic properties since the Middle Ages. 
Unfortunately, the plant is known to many as a weed and has almost been forgotten as a medicinal herb. The Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus gave it its botanical name based on the distinctive shape of its seed capsules, which resemble the typical shepherd's purse: Capsella means capsule, bursa means purse, and pastoris means shepherd.  

Natural habitat: The exact origin of shepherd's purse is unknown. It likely originated in Western Asia and Southern Europe. Today, the plant is found worldwide.
