The Joshua tree, a member of the yucca family, is a symbol of North American desert flora, with some specimens reaching ages of over 900 years. It owes its name to the Mormons, who believed its outstretched branches represented the arms of Joshua, who led the Israelites to the Promised Land. The slow-growing Joshua tree, with its sword-shaped leaves, is ideally suited for container planting. The dense, branched, upright or sideways-leaning inflorescence originates from the leaves. During its flowering period from March to May, the tree displays its spherical, cream-colored blossoms.

natural habitat is the Mojave Desert in North America, which stretches from California, home to Joshua Tree National Park, through Arizona and Nevada to Utah.
