Rebellious tropical inhabitant - A grass with thorns
The large thorn bamboo, like all bamboo species, belongs botanically to the grass family and, due to its limited frost resistance, is usually kept in containers, which restricts its growth to about two meters. In its natural habitat, however, it can reach up to 35 meters. Its culms, with their densely hairy shoots, are green when young and turn dark brown to dark blue with age. At this stage, they also develop their characteristic covering of thorns. The bamboo tolerates pruning well and can remain outdoors until late autumn, as it can withstand short periods of sub-zero temperatures.
Natural habitat: The large thorn bamboo is widespread in South and Southeast Asia, as well as in tropical Africa and Madagascar.
