The easy-to-care-for Mammillaria genus, with approximately 400 species, is one of the most species-rich genera of cacti. Instead of ribs, its stems have tubercles, from which it derives its botanical name (mamilla = nipple), and from whose tips emerge the diverse spines. Its bell-shaped flowers appear singly or in clusters from spring to early summer.

Natural habitat: The Mammillaria genus is native to the southwestern United States, extending through Mexico and across Central America to Colombia. However, the area of ​​greatest species diversity is found in Mexico.
