Giants for 15 million years

Its typical appearance is characterized by its tall, conical crown atop a largely branchless trunk. The giant sequoia's heartwood is reddish-brown, which explains its English name, Redwood Tree. While giant sequoias can be kept in check for a few years by growing them in containers, they ultimately need to be planted in the ground and, if fully winter-hardy, can reach impressive heights as garden trees.

Natural habitat: The Sierra Nevada in the US state of California is considered the true natural habitat of Sequoia gigantea. Since it is also threatened with extinction there, the largest populations are found in national parks such as Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks.
