Sweet and creamy with a light nutty flavor

Butternut squash fruits are shaped like an elongated pear with a light brown skin and dense, orange flesh. The flesh is soft and generally not fibrous. The fruit reaches approximately 20 centimeters in length and 2 kilograms in weight. Each plant produces an average of 3 to 4 fruits.

Natural habitat:  The squash originated in South America. Today, it is cultivated worldwide in all warm regions. At the end of the 19th century, the squash was introduced to the Japanese island of Hokkaido by American agricultural advisors. The Japanese then cultivated the delicate Hokkaido squash from the then rather bland rice squash.

In the kitchen:  Squash are very versatile in the kitchen. They are excellent for preparing soups, stews, and curries. Squash can also be wonderfully prepared as a flavorful alternative to potato wedges. Put a little oil and spices in a bowl and coat the squash pieces with the marinade. Then, cook the pieces in a hot oven for 20 to 30 minutes, until they are soft inside and crispy outside. Serve with salad and yogurt or guacamole, or as a side dish with chili.
