Palm tree beauty from Florida

The sturdy gray trunk of the palmetto palm takes on a woven appearance over the years as the split and shed remnants of the leaf stalks increasingly cover it. Its beautiful, blue-green to green, circular fan-shaped fronds are deeply incised almost to the leaf stalk and folded along the midrib. Undemanding in terms of soil, this palm thrives in swampy areas as well as on sandy coastal soils and is slightly frost-tolerant. It typically produces one to three new whorls of leaves per year.

Native to the southeastern United States, the Sabal palmetto is considered a symbol of Florida, but is also widespread in the US states of North Carolina, Missouri, Louisiana, and Texas, as well as in the Bahamas.
