The first blooming harbinger of spring - Helpful for coldsThe common primrose (Cowslip) reaches a height of 8 to 30 centimeters and is usually found in small to large groups, where the stem bearing the flower grows from rosettes of oval leaves. It is among the first plants to bloom in spring. Depending on the location, its bright yellow, strongly fragrant flowers bloom from April to June in the north or from February to May in the south. Since the primrose is not native to the Mediterranean region, it is not known as an ancient medicinal plant. Its medicinal value was only discovered later and described, for example, by Hildegard von Bingen. Medicinal properties: Primroses are valued as medicinal plants for their saponin content, as the extracts have an expectorant effect on colds with phlegmy coughs and runny noses. Tea: Pour a cup of boiling water (150 ml) over one to two teaspoons of primrose roots or flowers and let it steep for ten minutes before straining and drinking in small sips. Primrose tincture: Place primrose roots or flowers in a screw-top jar and cover with double-distilled grain spirit or pure alcohol until all plant parts are submerged. Let the mixture steep, sealed, for 2 to 6 weeks. Then strain and pour into a dark bottle. Fresh, young primrose leaves can also be added to wild herb salads. |
