Purple loosestrife owes its name to its purported hemostatic properties in herbal medicine. This perennial grows to a height of 50 to 150 cm and has a thick, woody, upright stem. It blooms from June to September in long, reddish-violet to purplish-red flower spikes with up to 100 striking individual flowers. The vibrant blossoms attract bees and butterflies to the garden.

Natural habitat: Purple loosestrife is native to Europe. However, it also occurs in North Africa, Asia, and North America. It is often found in marshes or ditches.
