The slender and tall Ravenala belongs to the Strelitziaceae family, but its leaf arrangement is unique. Its leaf blades stand at a 90° angle to the petioles on a palm-like trunk, forming the characteristically fan-like shape. In a container, it reaches a height of up to two meters and is therefore suitable for bright rooms. It gets its name from the water-filled pockets at the base of the leaves, which were said to be lifesaving for travelers. In Madagascar, the long-stalked leaves are traditionally used for thatching roofs, and the leaf veins are used as building material.
