The European wild species, common vervain (Verbena officinalis), was already considered in antiquity to be a plant used in birth rituals and as a remedy for injuries. Furthermore, folk mythology recounts various miraculous and protective properties. In Wales, it is still known today as devil's bane. Vervain grows with square stems up to 70 centimeters tall. From June to September, the plant displays its nectar-rich, pale lilac flowers. The plants emit a slightly spicy fragrance, attracting many butterflies.

Natural habitat: Originally from South America, vervain comprises numerous species and is distributed throughout the world.
