Wu-Wei-Zi means "herb of five flavors." And indeed, when eating the small red berries, you experience all five tastes: sweet, sour, spicy, salty, and bitter. While the Chinese berry is still relatively exotic in our region, in China it is a prized berry and medicinal plant with a long tradition, used as a traditional tonic. This deciduous, perennial woody climbing plant is easy to care for, winter-hardy, and can reach a height of several meters. The oval, slightly pointed leaves are glossy and turn yellow in autumn. In May, rather inconspicuous white to light pink flowers appear, emitting an aromatic fragrance. The bright red fruits of the Wu-Wei-Zi can usually be harvested in long clusters in autumn, starting in the second year. They can then be easily processed into jam, syrup, or non-alcoholic beverages. As a climbing plant with decorative fruit in summer, Schisandra can also be used to green pergolas, trellises, and espaliers.
Its natural habitat: The earliest mention of Schisandra dates back to the Han Dynasty almost 2,000 years ago. It is native to Japan, Korea, and China.
