The rarest bird of paradise flower – In honor of Nelson Mandela

The seeds of this very rare Strelitzia, named in honor of Nelson Mandela, were only obtained from the crossbreeding of two yellow-flowering varieties. Unlike the typically orange-flowered S. reginae, its three petals are golden yellow. Its leaves are also somewhat narrower, and it usually reaches a height of one to one and a half meters when grown in a container. The radiant yellow flowers then emerge from the long leaf sheaths. The Strelitzia is easy to cultivate and usually blooms from its third year onward.
