Evergreen deciduous tree and multi-talented homeopathic remedy

There it stands, imposing, this evergreen tree with its large, round fruits. The tree arrived in Europe in the 15th century, but its constituents were valued as essential medicines over 1000 years ago and are still used in modern homeopathy. Here, it is better known by its botanical name, Nux vomica. However, its constituents should not be underestimated. The well-known alkaloid strychnine is highly toxic if incorrectly dosed and is present in all parts of the plant. In ancient times, it was used as an arrow poison and to tranquilize animals. In the Middle Ages, it was used against the plague, and in India and China for weakness, cardiovascular problems, and a variety of other ailments; in very small doses, it was considered a popular remedy. However, strychnine has largely disappeared from conventional medicine due to its side effects. The nux vomica is also known as crow's eye, a name likely inspired by its large, red-orange fruits.

Natural habitat: The strychnine tree originates from Southeast Asia, especially India, Java and Ceylon.
