Evergreen shrub plant – also known as Ashwagandha

This hardy plant is a very special representative of its night-shaded genus. Due to its versatile effects and high tolerability, ashwagandha is one of the most important medicinal plants in Ayurvedic medicine. It is primarily used for insomnia, but traditionally it is also used in magical applications. In the West, it is sold in powder form as a fortifying dietary supplement. Ashwagandha is Sanskrit for "smell of the horse," and the roots have a strong horse-like odor. It grows to a height of 30-150 cm. Its flowers become brownish and papery to almost completely translucent until the berries inside ripen. At full ripeness, they open, revealing the scarlet fruits. 

Natural habitat: Mediterranean region, North Africa, South Asia, and the Canary Islands.
