Hollyhocks are quintessential cottage garden plants. They are well-suited as solitary specimens, and due to their size, also for the back of perennial borders or for planting along house walls. Their robust, palm-sized flowers appear from July to September. The black hollyhock isn't actually black, but rather glows a deep, dark red when backlit. Before the invention of chemical dyes, its blossoms were used to extract a red pigment for coloring food. The flowers of the black hollyhock enhance any tea and enrich its flavor. They also make a charming garnish in salads or summer punches.
