Columbines were already cultivated in European gardens in the late Middle Ages, and the plant has since become a staple in numerous monastery and farm gardens. They grow upright and reach a height of up to 70 centimeters. The nodding flowers, three to five centimeters wide, appear between May and June at the ends of the stem and its side branches. They are rich in nectar and valuable for insects. Columbines are endangered and protected by law.
Natural habitat: Columbines are originally found in open woodlands and thickets in Western, Central, and Southern Europe, extending as far as Western Ukraine.
