The checkered pattern of its pretty flowers gives the plant its common name. As an early bloomer, it displays its attractive checkered flowers from mid-April to early May. The flowers develop at the ends of the 15 to 30 centimeter long, reddish-brown stems. In Germany, the checkered lily is on the Red List and is considered a specially protected species.
Natural habitat: The natural habitat of the checkered lily extends from Styria in Austria through Slovenia, Hungary, and Croatia to Romania. It is also now found in Central and Northern Europe,
where it grows in nutrient-poor, damp meadows in the floodplains of rivers.
