The Japanese white pine develops a conical crown when young, which becomes somewhat irregular with age, on branches arranged in tiers. Typical of pines, five of its long, soft needles are arranged in a cluster. This is the origin of its alternative name – Japanese five-needle pine. In spring, it displays numerous small red flowers. In the Far East, the pine symbolizes immortality and vitality. The Japanese white pine is considered a key tree in bonsai culture in Japan because it is easy to cultivate as a bonsai.

Natural habitat: The Japanese white pine is native to Asia, ranging from Japan to South Korea. There, it primarily inhabits sunny, high-altitude mountain regions.
