The evergreen olive tree is arguably the quintessential cultivated plant of Southern Europe and can easily reach a biblical age of several hundred years. Over the years, its gnarled trunk becomes increasingly prominent. Its oval-shaped, blue-green leaves are whitish-gray on the underside, giving the tree its silvery sheen.

Natural habitat: Olea europaea has been cultivated in the Mediterranean region since the 4th millennium BC.
