The leaves of the deciduous white mulberry tree serve as food for silkworms in Indian silk production. The tree's leaves can vary from smooth-edged to deeply finger-shaped and deeply lobed. It owes its name to its white buds, which appear in May and June, and its white fruits, which can turn reddish in strong sunlight. Even young trees can bear abundant quantities of the juicy, sweet fruit.
