The biting stonecrop (Sedum perfoliatum) is a robust, perennial succulent that enriches any rock garden with its dense, carpet-like cushions, reaching only 5 to 15 cm in height. Its small, fleshy leaves store water and give the plant its characteristic, succulent appearance. From May to July, it adorns itself with bright yellow, star-shaped flowers that are not only visually striking but also attract bees and butterflies. As the name "bitter stonecrop" suggests, the leaves contain pungent alkaloids, which were once even used as a pepper substitute. Traditionally, the plant is planted in rock gardens, on dry stone walls, or in gravel beds, where it thrives with minimal care.

Natural habitat: Originally native to Europe and Western Asia, the biting stonecrop grows in sunny, dry locations such as rocks, walls, or sandy soils. Today, it is widespread in many temperate regions of the world and feels particularly at home in barren, nutrient-poor habitats.
